“Of course you have memories,” she continues, “and these memories are convincing. But it’s really at the moment when I write them down - when I write about my relationship with that Japanese boy in Ni d’Eve, Ni d’Adam - that they reach a degree of reality which is incandescent, that I’ve really conquered a story, understood it and feel that it is really part of me.” Often she has no opinions about an experience until the process has begun, she explains. “It’s while writing that suddenly a point of view appears: ‘So, that’s what I really thought about this thing’. Then it feels part of me.”

“당연히 기억은 존재하죠” 그녀가 말을 이었다. “그리고 기억들은 설득력을 가져요. 하지만 내가 기억에 대해 글을 쓰는 순간 - 아담도 없고 이브도 없다 에서 쓴 일본 소년과의 연애를 쓸 때도 - 기억이 빛나는 현실로 변해요. 기억 속의 이야기를 정복하고, 이해하고 또 나의 일부분이 됨을 느끼죠.” 종종 그녀는 글로 표현하지 않은 글에 대해 의견이 없다. 그리고 설명하기를, “글을 쓰는 도중 갑자기 시각이 생겨요. ‘그래, 이게 정말 내가 생각하던 거야’. 그러면서 나의 일부가 되는 거죠.”

She describes her writing as being guided completely by instinct, saying she becomes “pregnant” with a book and must deliver it, no matter what.

그녀는 책을 “임신”하고 반드시 끝을 내야한다고 얘기하며 그녀의 글은 본능에 의해 만들어지는 것이라고 설명했다.

Despite her insistence that she works by instinct, Nothomb dismisses the idea that writing comes spontaneously, that there’s no need to learn how to write.

그녀의 작품들이 본능에 의해 만들어 진다는 사실과는 다르게 노통은 글쓰기가 무의식적으로 일어나는 행위가 아니라 한다. 또한 글쓰기를 배울 필요가 없다는 사실도 부정한다.
